Call For Board Member Applications

JusticeTrans is currently seeking two new members for its Board of Directors! JusticeTrans is a nonprofit organization located in what is colonially known as Canada, whose vision is to create a world free of transphobia, systemic violence, and injustice, where Two Spirit, trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people can thrive. Our mission is to improve access to justice for Two Spirit, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming (2STNBGN) communities. We aim to provide accessible legal education to 2STNBGN people by challenging transphobic policy and advocating for community-based transformative social justice. To learn more about JusticeTrans, our activities, and our values, visit https://justicetrans.org/en/about-us.

By joining our Board you would be joining a small and tight-knit group actively working to improve the lives of our communities. As a community organization by and for Two Spirit, trans, non-binary, and gender non-conforming people, we strongly encourage members of these communities to apply. At least one spot is reserved for someone who is transfeminine, and at least one is reserved for someone who is Black or a person of colour, in accordance with our organization’s commitment to justice, equity, and diversity. We expect to increase the number of Directors sitting on the board in 2022 (currently, the Board has 6 positions).

Responsibilities of Directors include:

  • Ensuring the organization follows and respects its mission, vision and values.
  • Strategic planning (including implementation of the plan).
  • Overseeing the adoption and implementation of the budget, and the financial wellbeing of the organization.
  • Overseeing high level management.
  • Providing their own expertise to the deliberation of the board.
  • Acting as an ambassador of the organization.
  • Contributing to the development and evolution of the organization.
  • Attending monthly board meetings.

Directors are appointed for a term of 4 years (renewable). The time commitment expected of Directors varies from 3 to 4 hours a month, during most months, up to 12 hours a month during occasional busy periods (e.g., during the end of the fiscal year or to meet big project reporting deadlines). Directors are not remunerated; these are volunteer positions.

Anyone who is interested is encouraged to apply before March 1, 2022, by submitting a CV and a statement of interest outlining why you want to join, what you bring to the Board, and what your idea of justice is, to info.justicetrans@gmail.com. The statement of interest can be either in written or video format, with a maximum limit of 2 pages for written statements and 6 minutes for video statements. Written statements can be sent as a word or pdf file, and video files can either be uploaded to a platform and linked or sent as an attachment if the file size allows for it.
